AT&T Inc. (T) fell 2.2 percent to $35 before the open of U.S. exchanges. The biggest U.S. mobile-phone company was cut to ``neutral'' from ``outperform'' at Credit Suisse Group as the brokerage cut its rating on the industry to ``market weight.'' Credit Suisse cited increasing competition and a difficult economic environment for the downgrade.
Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) rose 4 percent to $45.70 before the open of U.S. exchanges. The world's largest personal-computer maker posted first-quarter profit that beat estimates and raised its annual forecast on demand overseas. Excluding some costs, first-quarter profit was 86 cents, exceeding the 81-cent average of projections compiled by Bloomberg.
Suntech Power Holdings Co. (STP) fell 19 percent to $37.10 before the open of U.S. exchanges. The world's fourth- largest maker of solar-power modules last year reported fourth- quarter profit of 30 cents per share. That missed the average analyst estimate by 18 percent, according to a Bloomberg survey.
