Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) rose $3.03, or 2.8 percent, to $110.50 in trading before U.S. exchanges opened. The only maker of reusable solid-rocket motors for U.S. space shuttles won a $1.8 billion contract from NASA for the first stage of the Ares I rocket.

Bear Stearns Cos. (BSC) gained $2.80, or 2.5 percent, to $113 in trading before U.S. exchanges opened. Shares of the second-largest underwriter of mortgage bonds may sell at double their current price should the company consider merging with or being acquired by a larger company, Barron's reported, citing unidentified sources.

Beazer Homes USA Inc. (BZH) fell $1.19, or 7.8 percent, to $14 in trading before U.S. exchanges opened. The U.S. homebuilder that sells to first-time buyers delayed filing its quarterly report, citing an internal investigation into its mortgage business.

Blackstone Group LP (BX) rose $2.26, or 8.9 percent, to $27.54. The world's largest private-equity fund said second- quarter earnings more than tripled as revenue at its four main units increased during a record year for leveraged buyouts. So- called economic net income after taxes exceeded analysts' average estimate by 35 percent.

Corning Inc. (GLW) gained 60 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $24.05 in trading before U.S. exchanges opened. Shares of the biggest maker of glass for liquid-crystal displays may gain 24 percent next year because of LCD product demand, Barron's reported, citing no one.

Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. (RL) The designer of Chaps and Club Monaco clothing said it plans to buy back as much as $250 million of its shares. The shares gained 16 cents to $77.40 on Aug.

WCI Communities Inc. (WCI) The Florida homebuilder that's seeking a buyer delayed filing its quarterly earnings and said in a statement citing preliminary results that it had a second-quarter loss of about $16.9 million. The stock fell 29 cents to $8.60 in regular trading on Aug. 10.
