Alcatel-Lucent American depositary receipts (ALU) declined 19 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $8.89 before the official open of U.S. exchanges. The world's largest maker of telecommunications equipment had its corporate credit rating cut one step by Moody's to three levels below investment grade because of lower-than-expected profit margins.
Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc. (BIO): The maker of laboratory equipment posted a third-quarter profit, excluding some items, of $1.03 a share, besting analyst estimates of 74 cents, the average in a Bloomberg survey. Shares rose 55 cents to $94.55 yesterday.
BMC Software Inc. (BMC): The maker of programs that manage databases and networks said that, excluding some items, it expects to earn $1.78 to $1.86 a share in the current fiscal year. A Bloomberg survey of analysts had an average estimate of $1.75. BMC shares added 46 cents, or 1.4 percent, to $33.68 yesterday.
General Motors Corp. (GM) fell $1.77, or 4.9 percent, to $34.39. The world's largest automaker reported a $39 billion third-quarter loss, its largest ever, after writing down $39 billion of future tax benefits.
Imergent Inc. (IIG): The Internet business-consulting firm said it had a loss of 7 cents a share in the fiscal first quarter, compared with profit of 18 cents a year earlier. Imergent shares slid 34 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $22.01 yesterday.
Protective Life Corp. (PL): The Birmingham, Alabama-based life insurer said third-quarter profit rose 28 percent to $1.02 a share from a year earlier. That beat analyst estimates of 94 cents. The shares rose 26 cents to $40.08 yesterday.
Total SA American depositary receipts (TOT) climbed $2.41, or 3 percent, to $83.10. Europe's third-largest oil company reported profit that beat analysts' estimates because of higher production and record crude prices.
