Home Depot Inc. (HD)fell 1.3 percent to $28.45 before the official open of U.S. exchanges. The world's largest home- improvement retailer said fourth-quarter profit fell and forecast earnings below analysts' estimates after the deepest housing slump in a quarter century showed no signs of letting up.

LDK Solar Co. (LDK): The Chinese maker of the silicon wafers used in solar cells said fourth-quarter net income was 44 cents a share. Analysts predicted the company would earn 41 cents a share, on average.

MBIA Inc. (MBI): The world's largest bond insurer eliminated its quarterly dividend in an effort to preserve capital and save its primary AAA credit rating. Separately, the company said it will stop writing guarantees on asset-backed securities for six months and will separate the business from its municipal insurance within five years. The stock fell 1.6 percent to $14.35 in extended trading yesterday.

Nordstrom Inc. (JWN): The owner of 102 department stores of the same name in the U.S. said fourth-quarter profit slipped for the first time in more than five years as apparel sales slowed. The company forecast full-year earnings that trailed some analysts' estimates. The stock rose 98 cents to $36.98 in regular trading yesterday.

Rite Aid Corp. (RAD) climbed 3.5 percent to $2.70. The third-largest U.S. drugstore chain was raised to ``overweight'' from ``neutral'' at JPMorgan Chase & Co., which said shares are undervalued and an ``uptick in flu trends'' may drive pharmacy and over-the-counter sales.

Sierra Health Services Inc. (SIE) gained 3.3 percent to $43.46. The medical benefits provider's acquisition by UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH) won Justice Department clearance, the government said.
