American Express Co. (AXP) fell $1.30, or 2.7 percent, to $46.10 after the official close of U.S. exchanges. The third- largest U.S. credit-card network said fourth-quarter profit declined 9.9 percent as it set aside more for customer defaults amid a slowing economy.

VMware Inc. (VMW) tumbled $21.81, or 26 percent, to $61.19 in extended trading. The software company said fourth- quarter sales climbed 80 percent to $412.5 million. That's short of the $416.8 million average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.


EMC Corp. (EMC), parent company of VMware, slipped $2.01, or 12 percent, to $14.90 in extended trading.
