Alcatel-Lucent American depositary receipts (ALU) lost 35 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $9.83 in trading before the open of U.S. exchanges. The world's biggest maker of telecommunications equipment is studying whether to replace Chief Executive Officer Patricia Russo and Chairman Serge Tchuruk, La Tribune reported, citing an unnamed person.

BorgWarner Inc. (BWA): The auto-parts maker may rise 17 percent or more to $105 or $110 in the coming year as demand for dual-clutch transmission systems, turbochargers and diesel engines is expected to increase, Barron's reported. BorgWarner fell 39 cents to $91.53 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. BorgWarner shares fell 39 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $91.53 on Sept. 28.

Citigroup Inc. (C) slid $1.01, or 2.2 percent, to $45.66 in trading before the open of U.S. exchanges. The biggest U.S. bank cut its third-quarter earnings forecast, citing ``weak performance'' in fixed-income credit markets and writedowns on leveraged loan commitments and mortgage-backed securities.

Bank of America Corp. (BAC ), the second-largest U.S. bank, fell 1.1 percent to $49.70. JPMorgan & Chase Co. (JPM), the third-largest U.S. bank, declined 1 percent to $45.40.

General Motors Corp. (GM) rose 11 cents, or 0.3 percent, to $36.81 in trading before the open of U.S. exchanges. The largest U.S. automaker's price estimate was raised at Deutsche Bank Securities by 4.4 percent to $47. Analyst Rod Lache said in the healthcare deal with the United Auto Workers may boost GM's earnings in the next three years.

Walgreen Co. (WAG): The largest U.S. drugstore chain dropped $2.89, or 6.1 percent, to $44.35 before the official open of U.S. exchanges. The company reported fourth-quarter profit of 40 cents a share. That's below the average analyst estimate of 47 cents a share.
